Rockport Recreation Area is located just 10 miles north of Alpena along the shoreline of Lake Huron. This area is home to a deep-water protected harbor, an abandoned limestone quarry and a series of sinkholes. This area became a state park in 2012 and offers a wide-range of activities including hiking, snowshoeing, boating, snorkeling and SCUBA diving.

I had been wanting to explore this area for a while and got the chance when I was in Alpena for the Alpena Ice Festival. After the Ice Festival, I stopped at Rockport Recreation Area on the way home. I did not bring snowshoes, but boots were more than sufficient probably due to the lack of snowfall we have had this year. I was able to walk out onto the old dock structure as well as climb to the top of the rock piles. I ventured out onto the ice to capture some photos from a unique perspective.
